As Sounders FC Prepares for MLS Cup, Seattle United Developing Future Sounders

Sounders FC Academy Has Strong Seattle United Influence

As the Seattle Sounders FC put the finishing touches on their MLS CUP Final preparations, Seattle United continues to work hard in an attempt to make sure the Sounders have many more MLS CUP final appearances in the future.

Currently, there are 29 players playing on the Seattle Sounders FC Academy teams that have come up through the Seattle United ranks, not to mention former standouts that have graduated out of the Academy program and are now plying their trade at the collegiate level.  Most notably, Handwalla Bwana is a freshman at the University of Washington and was named PAC 12 Freshman of the Year, as well as earning All PAC 12 honors.

To say the least, Seattle United continues to develop players that aspire to play at the highest levels in the country and one local coach is taking notice.  “The coaching staff at Seattle Sounders FC fully support the Academy program and appreciate the partnership with Seattle United,” says Sounders FC head coach Brian Schmetzer.  “After playing and coaching in the greater Seattle area for many years, I know there are a lot of kids playing youth soccer in our area.  It is important that they take every opportunity to develop to their fullest potential, and we believe partnerships like Seattle United and SSFC Academy can help them achieve their goals.”

Sounders Academy Technical Director Marc Nicholls agrees.  “Players from Seattle United continue to make a big impact on our Academy at all levels.  You can see it through all age groups from our Discovery Program to U14 National team player (Sota Kitahara) and all the way to the PAC-12 Freshman of the Year (Handwalla Bwana). With the addition of our joint hire, Dan Lock, who is paying attention to the vital ages of 8-12, we anticipate a very bright future for those coming through the pipeline.”

While all of us here at Seattle United are hoping for the city’s first MLS CUP title, our entire staff is working diligently to make sure that we can help develop the Sounders of the future.
