January 14, 2016

Seattle, WA — Seattle United FC and Seattle Reign FC today announced a partnership to support the development and operation of the Seattle Reign Academy, a new program to serve elite-level female soccer players in the Seattle region.

Seattle Reign Academy will be led by Laura Harvey, Seattle Reign FC head coach and general manager, who will serve as the Academy’s Executive Director. In addition, Reign FC is evaluating candidates to serve as the Academy’s Technical Director, who will lead the day-to-day operations of the Academy.

Supporting Harvey will be a Technical Committee that includes Jason Farrell, Seattle United’s Director of Coaching – Girls, Sam Laity, Seattle Reign FC Assistant Coach, and the Academy’s Technical Director. Coaches for the Seattle Reign Academy will be identified by Harvey and the Technical Committee, and will be employed by Seattle United.

“With this partnership Seattle United has taken a significant step towards becoming a world-class youth soccer club. Our partnership with the Reign will give us direct access to resources that will benefit our players, coaching staff and administrators,” said Jason Farrell, Seattle United’s Director of Coaching – Girls. “Seattle Reign FC has been at the forefront in terms of player development. Female players in Seattle deserve elite-level opportunities, which this partnership will deliver in a manner that is unique in our community.”

Beginning with tryouts this Spring for competition during the 2016/17 season, Seattle Reign Academy will field teams for 13-18 year-old females, and will seek to compete at the highest levels of competition available for those age groups.
Seattle Reign Academy Teams will wear authentic Seattle Reign FC match kits and training gear from Nike, featuring a newly-designed Seattle Reign Academy crest, as well as a Seattle United patch on the sleeve, signifying that Seattle Reign Academy teams will be a core part of Seattle United’s program offerings.

In addition to the Seattle Reign Academy teams, this partnership will deliver many additional benefits for Seattle United and Seattle Reign FC.

As part of the partnership, Seattle Reign’s coaching staff will provide curriculum support and coach education for Seattle United players and coaches. Seattle Reign FC players and coaches will be involved in Seattle United programs, and Seattle United coaches and players will have opportunities to observe and learn from the Reign’s first team training sessions. Likewise, the Seattle United community will help support and grow the highest level of women’s soccer, participating in Seattle United nights at Reign FC games, helping to build upon the growing support Reign FC enjoys at Memorial Stadium.

“Seattle Reign FC is in a unique position to influence the development of elite-level female players in our community. I am deeply passionate about youth player development and expect to build the Academy program in a manner that reflects my beliefs about how to develop world-class players on and off the pitch,” said Laura Harvey, Executive Director of Seattle Reign Academy. “I will play a significant role in running the Academy, but will rely on the support and experience of Seattle United to help the Academy achieve its full potential. Seattle United shares my vision for the Seattle Reign Academy and has proven to be an incredibly valuable partner in bringing the Academy to life.”
